salvation army blues

2001

1>shinkansen (r williams)

r- keyboard / written and recorded dec 1999 in Chicago.

written live to tape, on borrowed equipment, around xmas eve I think. Tried to use a lot of “asian”-sounding instruments on the keyboard.

2>salvation army blues (r williams)

r- vox, guitar, snare / written 1991 in germany / recorded may 2001 in Chicago

I wrote this in mosbach, germany. Rcorded on adat by marshall in the 920 west wilson basement, in a sort of concrete room with sacking material on the walls.

3>strobe (g eugene)

r- vox, guitar, keys, drum & bass prog. / recorded aug 2000 in chicago

I decided to record this after attending the adam again show at cornerstone. I used one track for the backing vocal & keyboard solo, which is why you hear the keyboard part jump out of the left channel and run to the middle of the mix. The drum & bass parts were played on a different keyboard, and tried to mimic the rhythm on the original song.

4>gnashville (music r williams / words by brink on the left coast)

r- vox, keys / written 1994 & 1997 / recorded aug 2000 in Chicago

words written by an artist friend, he wrote this poem about the mass exodus of the ccm community in the early 1990s to tennesee of all places. What fer, I dunno.

5>chinatown 3:00 a.m. (r williams)

r- upright piano, plumbing / recorded june 1999 in Chicago

piano recorded in the middle of the afternoon in uptown, but sound effects were actually captured at 3:00 a.m., in chinatown as the title implies.

6>watch what you’re doing (l norman)

r- vox, guitar / recorded june 1999 in chicago

a larry norman cover.

7>road one (r Williams / b tucker)

r- vox, bass, drums, harmonica / bill t.- guitar / words written in manila, 1999 / basic tracks recorded june 1997 / overdubs recorded june 1999 in Chicago

somehow the words from a different song seemed to fit here, I guess. edited down from 8 minutes and 12 seconds to 4 minutes and 37 seconds.

8>wanna go home (r williams)

r- vox, guitar / recorded june 1999 in Chicago

I was in a hurry to record this as m*a*s*h* was coming on t.v. in a few minutes.

9>do it again (b wilson)

r- vox, guitar / recorded june 1999 in Chicago

a beach boys cover

10>salvation army blues (back porch) (r Williams)

r- vox, harmonica, guitar / recorded june 1999 in chicago

left to right, pop’s body shop and harry gore

11>medley: (a)no jive, (b)live jive*, (c)amazing grace* (*featuring harry gore) (r Williams / traditional)

r- vox, guitar, percussion / harry gore – lead guitar pyrotechnics / backing provided by members of pop’s body shop / (a) recorded july 1992 in south korea / (b & c) recorded live at cornerstone 1997

check out harry as he does his hendrix version of the popular hymn. also includes a sax solo and a bass player from some metal band.

12>gnashville (demo) (r Williams / brink)

r- vox, guitar, organ / recorded may 1997 in chicago
